Three Roster Requirements that BYU Will Address Through the Transfer Portal
During the early signing period, BYU filled a number of roster gaps by recruiting from the JUCO and high school categories. The defensive line was one of the team’s primary priorities for 2024, and the defensive staff delivered by signing a slew of highly sought-after players.
There are still roster gaps to fill in the coming weeks, notably on offense. The following are three roster needs that BYU will address via the transfer portal.
1. THE QUARTERBACK BYU will bring in a quarterback via the transfer portal. During his signing day news conference, BYU offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick stated as much. The Cougars graduate Kedon Slovis, and Jake Retzlaff made too many mistakes to be given the starting job next season.
The Cougars have already made an offer There were a few quarterbacks who transferred to other colleges.
This hasn’t stopped BYU from looking into other solutions. It would not be shocking to see BYU sign a veteran quarterback in the near future.
2. ADVANCED LINE After the 2023 season, the offensive line proved to be a big source of worry. BYU may lose four of its five starters, which was a very real possibility.
Connor Pay and Brayden Keim, who will presumably start at center and left tackle next season, will return.
Even with Pay and Keim on board, the offensive line is in desperate need of reinforcements.
The Cougars have already offered a few transfer offensive linemen, and they plan to keep recruiting offensive linemen until they get another veteran offensive lineman or two.
3. LJ IS RUNNING BACK Martin has a promising future at BYU. Martin established himself as a starting running back in the Big 12 as a true freshman. Martin is expected to be the starting quarterback in 2024.
The depth at running back, on the other hand, is a huge worry.
Running backs take a lot of hits, and they need at least three to make it through the season. BYU is led by Miles Davis and Hinckley Ropati. During their BYU careers, Davis and Ropati both struggled to stay on the field.
BYU will look to add a running back or two through the transfer portal.
