Report: 49ers set to add veteran DT Sebastian Joseph-Day
Sebastian Joseph-Day looks to be another defensive lineman the 49ers are adding, one day after they were humiliated on Christmas.
Tuesday afternoon, rumors circulated that the player and the team had reached an agreement on a one-year contract. With multiple defensive tackles already on the injury report, the acquisition of another is considered an upgrade, even if the move won’t be completed until Wednesday.
The 28-year-old former captain of the Los Angeles Chargers has played in 14 games so far this season. In 2023, the native of Pennsylvania has accumulated 31 total tackles, 11 quarterback hits, and three sacks. With 224 tackles in his career, he has demonstrated his ability to stop the run in the trenches. In addition, Joseph-Day is Super
with the Los Angeles Rams, a bowl champion.
The acquisition came after the Chargers cut him after Week 14. Many were surprised to learn that “SJD” was moving to Santa Clara, where he will now start a new, deep postseason run.
This suggests that 49ers starting DT Arik Armstead is still dealing with ailments. Similar to his plantar fasciitis from the previous season, Armstead has missed the last several games due to foot problems. This season, Javon Hargrave, the follow starter, has also missed time due to a hamstring issue.
The 49ers should at least be able to stop the run with Joseph-Day in place after they allowed 33 points to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 16.
There is currently no role description, but the deal is anticipated to be formally revealed on Wednesday.NFL Network Former safety and insider Jason McCourty broke the story first, and local media later confirmed it.
