Meet Lucas Bergvall: ‘Exceptional’ Tottenham new boy following in footsteps of £132m duo
Today, Friday, marks Lucas Bergvall’s eighteenth birthday. He has decided to sign a five-year contract with Tottenham, having passed up Barcelona in favor of north London. Although the departing midfield prodigy from Djurgardens is a household name despite having played his whole career in Sweden, it is a credit to his remarkable talent that he had this option.
Who is the adolescent player who Spurs have agreed to pay, reportedly, roughly £8.5 million for before summer arrival? Well, a lot of elite European teams have been keeping an eye on him for a while.
Bergvall began his career with Swedish second-tier team IF Brommapojkarna. According to sporting director Peter Kisfaludy, during his formative years, the young player visited Serie A powerhouse Juventus and German powerhouse Bayern Munich. The 14-year-old Swede was apparently on trial at Manchester United, where Kisfaludy called him a ‘amazing talent’ because of his ‘technique and grasp of the game’.
Years later, Djurgarden’s director of football Bosse Andersson believes that the January tug-of-war between Spurs and Barca was something entirely unprecedented for the Swedish team. “I have worked in football for many years,” he stated. “This is unlike anything I have ever seen. Never.
The media is always very interested, but there are always rumors. What’s written is absurd. I think [Bergvall] finds it unbelievable as well. It’s highly likely that he will play this month overseas. that a club and I will come to an agreement.”
Though Bergvall joined Djurgardens in December 2022 and is expected to remain with the Allsvenskan team through the summer, he is just the most recent in a long line of elite players to have come through IF Brommapojkarna’s renowned development system.
While still a teenager, sport star Viktor Gyokeres developed a taste for goals with them, and Chelsea was rumored to be considering his massive £85 million release clause this winter. In contrast, Dejan Kulusevski was a member of the team for ten years before moving to Italy in 2016.t
