Is Auston Matthews capable of scoring 70 goals this season?
An NHL player hasn’t scored 70 goals in a single season in a long time. In fact, you’d have to go back 30 years to discover the last time that happened, as both the Buffalo Sabres’ Alexander Mogilny and the Winnipeg Jets’ Teemu Selanne scored 76 goals that season, the latter in their rookie season.
However, it is possible that we are witnessing it again. Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs is on pace for 75 goals this season heading into the holiday break, thanks in large part to his recent streak of seven consecutive with a goal, and eight of his past nine, with six of those eight games being multi-goal outings. Following Connor Last year, McDavid became the first player since 1996 to have more than 150 points in a season; who’s to say Matthews can’t achieve the same as the league’s leading goal-scorer?
This holiday season, Tyler Yaremchuk and Frank Seravalli decided to provide stocking stuffers to NHL players and clubs, including one that they believe will aid Matthews’ 70-goal season.
Tyler Yaremchuk says I’ll start with my first stocking stuffer: Auston Matthews’ health. I’d like to see him score 70 goals. I enjoy seeing great players do something that we don’t see very often, and getting 70 goals is right up there with Connor McDavid having 150 points in a season in my opinion.
This kind of thing doesn’t happen very often. In my perspective, the only thing preventing Matthews from reaching 70 is a lack of health, thus I would want to give him some.
Seravalli, Frank: I mean, I understand you’re a generous man. The good thing about that present is that you can give it to all 32 teams. I’m sure everyone of the 32 teams would like to be healthy.
