Bayern’s captain believes the defender’s departure is an example set by the club.
In an interview with Sport Bild, Bayern Munich’s Thomas Müller discussed the transfer of center-back Matthijs de Ligt as well as the defense’s problems.
Müller admits that whether ex-Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt can become as important for Bayern as Virgil van Dijk is for Liverpool is a pipe dream for the future, but more needs to be seen before such statements can be made. He believes De Ligt’s move this transfer window is an example set by Bayern and a message sent to both team players and other clubs.
Müller is confident in Bayern’s defenders’ abilities. He clarifies, however, that it is about more than just having top players. It’s also about working together to get things done so that the defense can shine.
The Bayern backline is often thought to be weak in defense, and Müller shared his thoughts on this.
“If you cultivate a style of play that allows you to score approximately 100 goals, you don’t stand with the defense behind the penalty area and you can always defend from the front,” Raumdeuter explained.
“However, you frequently have 40 meters of playing field behind you and may be more vulnerable to counterattacks.” You will find yourself in more awkward situations than if you cultivate an Italian accent.
