Guti, a Real Madrid legend, mocked former Barcelona and current Paris Saint-Germain forward Lionel Messi, saying that being the best is determined solely by wins.
The former Real Madrid midfielder, who made over 500 appearances for the Spanish capital club while winning five La Liga and three UEFA Champions League titles, responded to Messi’s comments about PSG being a better team than Madrid in the Champions League knockout stages last season.
“Last year’s elimination was complicated to digest because of how it happened; we had played two great games against Real Madrid and we missed it in small details,” the legendary forward said.
“The Champions League is a difficult competition to win because the best team does not always win and small details decide it, any mistake leaves you out of a tie,” he had added.
In response to these remarks, Guti questioned Messi’s claims, asking how someone judges being the best. He stated that PSG had two fair chances, which should have sufficed to establish the claim.
“What does it mean to be the best? How do you determine who is the best? When? In a single match, one knockout round, three knockout rounds…?” MARCA cited Guti’s response to El Chiringuito.
Last season’s UEFA Champions League Round of 16 ties between Real Madrid and PSG saw Kylian Mbappe‘s only goal be the difference. However, Madrid turned the tide in the second leg at Santiago Bernabeu, with Karim Benzema scoring a 17-minute hat-trick.
The Merengues then beat Chelsea and Manchester City in a similar fashion before defeating Liverpool in the final to claim their 14th European title.
