Cristiano Ronaldo of Manchester United has stated that he has no plans to retire from international football, and that he hopes to play for Portugal at the 2024 European Championship.
Ronaldo, 37, stated his desire to leave United in the summer, but he remains at the club and will play a role in Erik ten Hag’s squad until at least January.
Ten Hag has consistently denied reports that Ronaldo will leave the club this summer, and the forward scored his first goal of the season last week against FC Sheriff. Ronaldo has only started three games this season after returning late from pre-season.
Ronaldo has been named to Portugal’s squad for this month’s Nations League matches, and he will play in the Qatar World Cup. Last year, Ronaldo broke the all-time international scoring record, and he remains an important part of Portugal’s international plans.
He was honored at a Portuguese Football Federation ceremony on Tuesday, and he told the audience about his future plans, saying he wants to represent his country at Euro 2024, which will be held in Germany.
“It’s been a long road, but I’d like to take this opportunity to say that my road is not yet over,” Ronaldo said, according to Goal. “My ambition is high, and I am motivated. I’m in the squad with a lot of young players, and I’m hoping to play in both the World Cup and the Euros in 2024.”
Ronaldo will be 38 years old in February, and he will be 39 if he plays in Euro 2024. His contract at Old Trafford expires in the summer of 2023, but there is an option for an extension if both United and Ronaldo agree.
