Ten Hag will lead Manchester United in the Manchester derby for the first time on Sunday.
Former Manchester United midfielder Luke Chadwick has identified the most important decision Erik ten Hag must make ahead of Sunday’s derby.
Ten Hag arrived at Old Trafford in May, and this weekend’s Manchester derby will be his first as a manager. After a shaky start, United has turned the corner this season and enters the match against City on a four-game winning streak.
The Reds are fifth in the Premier League table, five points behind the Blues despite playing one fewer game. Following the international break, United will face a number of selection dilemmas, with many of Ten Hag’s men impressing with their national teams.
However, in an interview with Caught Offside, Chadwick stated that Casemiro’s role on Sunday will be critical to the overall outcome. “I think the most important decision Ten Hag has to make is with Casemiro,” he said.
“This is a massive game, but it’s the kind of big game he’s played in before.” But Scott McTominay has been excellent alongside Eriksen, so if everyone is fit, I’d imagine the manager would be tempted to stick with the team that has been performing so well in recent games.

“I believe they have earned the opportunity to continue their winning streak. Having Casemiro and [Cristiano] Ronaldo on the bench are obviously great options, but I believe that because the game is away from home, [Marcus] Rashford, in particular, should start ahead of Ronaldo up front – his pace on the break could be crucial in a game where City are likely to have the majority of the ball.”
Despite Pep Guardiola‘s team is the bookies’ favorites, Chadwick believes Ten Hag’s team can continue their run of form in the league. “I’m looking forward to the game because United have had a good record at the Etihad in recent years,” he added.
“This is now a true litmus test to see where the club is at. Arsenal have obviously had a great start, but Manchester City are probably the best team in the league this season, and this game could be a real indicator of where United are currently at.” As we’ve seen in recent Manchester derbies, it may be advantageous for United to go there as underdogs. I’d like to see them succeed, but you also feel you’d settle for a draw on the day.”
