Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag intends to resume his search for a new right-back in the winter transfer window after the club failed to sign Sergino Dest.
Manchester United football director John Murtough intervened to persuade Erik ten Hag to stick with Aaron Wan-Bissaka – but the Dutchman will press ahead with plans to sign a new right-back in the New Year.
Although Wan-Bissaka impressed after joining from Crystal Palace for £50 million in 2019, the 24-year-old has regressed in the past year and has lost his first-team spot to the previously unfancied Diogo Dalot under Ten Hag.
Ten Hag was given the freedom to overhaul a squad that had just limped to United’s worst-ever finish in the Premier League era upon his arrival in the summer. Despite a slow start in the market, United spent more than £200 million before the September 1 deadline to bring in six new players.
Ten Hag, on the other hand, was unable to find a new full-back to compete with Dalot. Murtough was able to persuade the new United manager to abandon plans to sell Wan-Bissaka, but the full-reprieve back is likely to be short-lived.
Manchester United are planning to rekindle their interest in AS Monaco right-back Vanderson, who they tried to sign last summer, according to Sport, via Sport Witness.
The 21-year-old, who was also pursued by Barcelona, was thought to be out of reach after signing a new five-year contract with the French giants last month. However, according to the report, it has been ‘decided’ that Vanderson’s second and ‘final’ season in France will be this year.

That development has piqued the interest of a number of Premier League clubs, including Manchester United, who have ‘already begun to move to try to tie up a future deal for the highly-rated full-back, who only moved to Ligue 1 in January.
Manchester United’s stance on Vanderson is yet another sign that Wan-future Bissaka’s at Old Trafford under Ten Hag is bleak.
In the early stages of the season, the former Ajax manager preferred Dalot and even used Tyrell Malacia and Victor Lindelof in Wan-position Bissaka ahead of the former Palace man.
During the final weeks of the transfer window, Ten Hag was thought to be pursuing a deal for Barcelona’s Sergino Dest. However, the 21-year-old, who eventually joined AC Milan on loan, was only likely to join United if the club could find a replacement for Wan-Bissaka.
Palace was considering re-signing their former academy graduate for £10 million before Murtough’s intervention, combined with a lack of options in the market, prompted Ten Hag to grant Wan-Bissaka a reprieve.
