Manchester United’s rebuilding under Erik ten Hag continues, and the Dutchman is eyeing more signings in January, which may conflict with what club chiefs have planned.
Manchester United’s chiefs, according to reports, are at odds with Erik ten Hag over their next moves in the transfer market.
The Dutchman arrived at Old Trafford this summer and spent over £200 million on new signings as he sought to shape his squad. United’s sixth-place finish last season highlighted the need to address several areas of the team, and Ten Hag quickly got to work.
Despite some difficulties in getting deals completed, new faces were added to the defense, midfield, and attack. Despite winning four games since United’s first two Premier League losses highlighted the need for more recruits. Ten Hag wishes to continue reviving his squad as soon as possible.
That would imply the Red Devils entering the market in January, but according to The Athletic, owner Joel Glazer, chief executive Richard Arnold, and football director John Murtough are all focused on next summer, which could cause some friction when it comes to their next move.
“We have many meetings – we have to improve the structures in and around the club, and we will also look to the window in January or next summer,” Ten Hag has already stated.
Tyrell Malacia arrived from Feyenoord as the club’s first signing of the new era, and Christian Eriksen joined on a free transfer shortly after. Lisandro Martinez then followed his manager from Ajax to the Red Devils, joining in a deal worth more than £50 million, and has settled into the heart of the defense.
Ten Hag pushed hard for Antony, whom Ajax insisted was not for sale, and the Brazilian moved late in the window for a huge fee of £82 million, making him the club’s second-most expensive player in history. A new right-back was also on United manager Jose Mourinho’s wish list. The presence of Diogo Dalot has reduced the need for reinforcements in that area.
Due to the difficulty of conducting mid-season recruitment, United has tended not to make major January additions. Bruno Fernandes’ arrival in 2020 was an unusual example of them spending heavily on the New Year. Much will be determined by the team’s position in 2023, with Ten Hag aiming to return to the top four and secure the title.
United’s spending over the last decade has been well documented, highlighting how poorly the millions have been spent, with their last trophy coming in 2017 under Jose Mourinho.
