According to SPORT, Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde has been awarded the Charra de Oro award, which is given to the best Uruguayan athlete of the year.
The 24-year-old midfielder has risen to prominence dramatically in the last year. He was instrumental in Los Blancos’ La Liga and UEFA Champions League triumphs last season, even assisting the game-winning goal in the UCL final against Liverpool.
Under manager Carlo Ancelotti, Valverde has taken on an important role in the side and has impressed with his performances, whether in midfield or on the right flank.
His development and success have now been recognized by the Circle of Sports Journalists of Uruguay with the Charra de Oro award (CPDU).
On Saturday night, the ceremony was held at Montevideo’s Nelly Goitio Auditorium. The 24-year-old midfielder, however, was unable to attend the event due to preparations for Real Madrid’s derby against Atletico Madrid.
Los Blancos will face their rivals at the Civitas Metropolitano later tonight, knowing that a win will be required to reclaim first place in La Liga from Barcelona.
Given his recent form, Valverde, who aspires to be Real Madrid’s captain in the future, will play an important role in Ancelotti’s side.
Indeed, the midfielder has scored a goal in each of his last two games against RCD Mallorca and RB Leipzig, and he will be looking to keep the momentum going.
His award for Best Uruguayan Athlete of the Year is well deserved, given his contributions to Real Madrid’s success.
