Barcelona’s economic vice-president Eduard Romeu stated in an interview with El Mat de Catalunya Ràdio (h/t SPORT) that Lionel Messi’s potential return next summer would be feasible for the club because he would arrive on a free transfer.
Everyone was surprised when Messi left Barcelona last summer. However, due to La Liga Fair Play rules, the club was unable to renew his contract. He eventually agreed to terms with PSG on a two-year contract.
Messi, on the other hand, will be a free agent next year, and Barcelona is attempting to re-sign him, as president Joan Laporta and co. want the Argentine icon to write more chapters in his legacy at Spotify Camp Nou.
For his part, the 35-year-old superstar is reportedly ready to leave PSG when his contract expires. And, now that the former Barcelona captain is a free agent, Eduard Romeu has stated that bringing him back to the club is a possibility.
“If he returned, it would be free, so it would be viable in my area, though I don’t have the budget for it.” He is a club icon, and this will always be his home, but it will be a technical decision,” Romeu explained.
The Barcelona economic vice-president also stated that the club does not anticipate any problems with player registrations next season, saying: “Barça will have no problems next summer with the registrations.”
Romeu also admitted that, while things have improved financially, there is still a lot of work to be done to get Barcelona back on track.
“We saved Barça, but we haven’t resolved it, we don’t have it healthy; it requires a lot of austerities, a lot of rigor, and there is a lot of work to be done,” he added.
Barcelona’s bloated wage bill remains an issue for the club to address, and Romeu admitted that it is a difficult task, but that they had done a good job slashing nearly €150 million from the wage bill while adding that more progress will be made.
“There have been a lot of contract changes and deferrals.” We’ll be making a decent living in a couple of seasons.”
