Following the departure of Simon Smith in the summer, academy coach Adam Bartlett has now been named the club’s head of goalkeeping, as Mark Douglas at iNews revealed.
The 36-year-old has spent his entire career in the North East, having played for Hartlepool, Gateshead, and Darlington. Bartlett was a member of the Newcastle squad that went to the San Siro 17 years ago as the third-choice goalkeeper when we faced Inter Milan, but he was released in 2005.
Bartlett took over as coach following the departure of long-serving coach Smith, and his appointment is now official after impressing Eddie Howe since joining his staff in March.
“I am happy to share that I am starting a new position as Head of Goalkeeping at Newcastle United Football Club,” Bartlett said on LinkedIn.
It’s no surprise that Dan Ashworth chose to promote from within; it’s common for the technical director to do so if he believes the candidate has enough promise. In 2020, Ashworth said on the Training Ground Guru podcast: “I like to create an aspirational culture among my workforce.”
“Of all the things I’ve learned in my 13 years as a technical director, the most important is that it’s all about giving young people a chance.” That could be a young coach, a young player, or a young physio – you never know what they’re capable of until you give them a chance.”
