It is no secret that Barcelona looked into several options for a new right-back during the summer transfer window.
Cesar Azpilicueta was the club’s top target, but he agreed to terms with Chelsea. There were rumors about Juan Foyth joining Spotify Camp Nou, but the Villarreal defender’s injury put an end to those rumors.
Thomas Meunier was also considered, but Borussia Dortmund refused to let him go. After Arsenal terminated Hector Bellerin’s contract, Barcelona signed him on a free transfer.
According to SPORT, Barcelona considered AS Monaco youngster Vanderson as a possible replacement for the right-back position.
According to the report, the Blaugrana are big fans of the 21-year-old Brazilian due to his attacking abilities. He is tall, strong, and powerful, with quick feet, making him an ideal fit for the profile that Barça was looking for.
To that end, club director Mateu Alemany approached Monaco for Vanderson after Xavi informed him that he needed to replace Sergino Dest with a new right-back. The Ligue 1 club, on the other hand, demanded €60 million for the Brazilian.
Furthermore, Monaco were unwilling to sell Vanderson after signing him from Gremio in January of this year. In any case, the price tag was enough to put Barcelona off, though they are still keeping an eye on the 21-year-old Brazilian.
Indeed, the Catalans have big plans to sign a new right-back next summer, and Vanderson is one of the targets they will look at, though they may face competition from Manchester United and other Premier League clubs.
With both Hector Bellerin and Sergi Roberto’s contracts expiring in 2023, Spotify Camp Nou will require a new right-back. It remains to be seen whether Barcelona will pursue Vanderson again or look for other options.
