Kaizer Chiefs are in the hunt for fresh talent to bolster their squad for the upcoming season, and according to insiders privy to information, are setting their sights on a Royal AM dynamic midfielder.

24-year-old winger Mfundo Thikazi has emerged as a target for Amakhosi, with the club interested in securing his services for next season, the Siya crew understands.

Siya sources close to both clubs have indicated that discussions about Thikazi’s potential availability are underway, with Chiefs believed to be keen on preparing a deal before they get ready for preseason.

“For now, it’s just interest. Yes, Chiefs have shown interest in the player and we will see when the team returns from the break for preseason training and camp to see what will happen,” said the Siya source.

“It’s not the first time that Chiefs have shown interest in Thikazi. Last season before they signed Tebogo Potsane they actually wanted him but Royal AM could not let him go. But at the moment it looks like they will let him go,” the source added.

However, any transfer could be complicated by Royal AM’s current predicament under a FIFA transfer ban, which restricts their ability to sign replacements, the second Siya source believes.

“The one thing that could block or delay the move for Mfundo (Thikazi) to Kaizer Chiefs would be Royal AM not wanting to lose a player while they can’t sign new ones. So, they are trading carefully on this one and though Chiefs have made inquires, it will be a difficult decision for Royal AM to make right now as they don’t have enough experienced players going into the new season. They don’t want to find themselves in the same situation like last season fighting against relegation until the lasy day of the season,” the second source told Soccer Laduma.

Thikazi, who has been part of the Royal AM setup since its days as Royal Eagles, made 23 appearances last season, finding the back of the net once. His potential move to Chiefs has been a topic of discussion since last season, confirmed by his agency, Touch Africa.

Soccer Laduma contacted the player’s agency, Touch Afrika’s Thabang Mncwabe who confirmed that there has been interest from Chiefs since last season.

“Yes, they inquired about him from last season but then Royal AM gave him a new contract which runs until June 2026. But yes, there has been interest and an inquiry from Chiefs,” Mncwabe confirmed to Soccer Laduma.

As Chiefs look to reinforce their squad in preparation for a title challenge, the acquisition of Thikazi could provide a fresh impetus to their attacking options. However, the move hinges on Royal AM’s willingness to part with one of their key players amidst the constraints of a transfer ban, setting the stage for a delicate negotiation process in the weeks ahead.
