Neal Maupay has developed a solid reputation for making headlines for his actions on the football field that go beyond football. He enjoys winding up players, which he accomplished in the London
West Ham striker Antonio discussed how the French striker deliberately seeks to rile up the opponents in an episode of BBC’s Footballer’s Football Podcast. He came into limelight after the fight he had with Bernd Leno when he was still playing for Brighton. This has led the whole Arsenal fan base to hating him with all their beings, and looks like Tottenham fans will join in with the men in Red for once.
The dart throwing celebration ruffled a few feather on the Tottenham roster as well as among fans. A lot was exchanged in the game between the player and to say there was no love lost would be an understatement.
What did Neal Maupay say?
Neal Maupay sat down with SPORTbible and was assessing a few winding up moments in the Premier League when he discussed the dart celebration against Tottenham and how he had the whole fan base on strings:
“Believe it or not, that wasn’t planned. I scored and as I was running, I thought I’m going to throw a dart. He celebrates his goals like that, but apparently you’re not allowed to throw a dart, it’s only him that can do it. The way he got offended, it was quite funny. Big man [Ivan Toney] got away with it because he did it as well but everyone went for me. That’s class, I can’t lie. It would have been better if we had won. But at their place in front of their fans, got all their players raging, that’s goated. Just by throwing a dart I got 11 players on toast. It was so easy. It’s mad how easy it is, but I’m just having fun, for me it is fun. Football is a game and I’m trying to enjoy myself.”
Banter is part of the game and Maupay broke no rules with his antics. At the end of the day, what matters is the result and Tottenham certainly came out on top. While one can understand Maddison giving it back, we should not be getting so rattled. Last thing we need is for better teams to realise that they can throw us off by provoking us.
