Lucas Bergvall is projected to immediately go into the Tottenham first team and compete for a starting spot when he arrives at the club, Paul Robinson understands.

Spurs pulled off a “huge coup” by agreeing a deal for the Swedish midfielder on 2 February, beating La Liga giants Barcelona to his signature [Sky Sports] among a host of interested clubs.

The 18-year-old is set to join Spurs in July on a five-year contract and Robinson has heard that the teenager is “that good” he is expected to contribute for Ange Postecoglou straight away and isn’t going to be sent out on loan to develop.

The Djurgarden man has already made his international debut for Sweden and has reportedly cost the club around £8.5million [BBC Sport, 1 February].

Robinson exclusively told Tottenham News: “From what I hear about the player he’s a real talent. We’re not overly versed on watching his games or know too much about him, but now that you know that Tottenham have signed him and you’ve done a bit of research on him you know that Tottenham were going head-to-head with Barcelona to sign him.

“From what I’m hearing from inside the club he’s coming in next season in pre-season as part of the first-team squad. He’s not coming in as a youngster with prospects who could potentially be loaned out again. 

“He’s that good. I mean from what I’m hearing he’s coming in preseason and he will hit the ground running and be in contention for a starting place next year and be part of the squad.

“He’s a quality player for his age. Look at the experience that he’s got, the amount of games that he’s played, and just the interest around Europe.

“For Tottenham to beat the other teams that were going for him it’s a huge coup for them and I think he’ll be a fantastic addition next season. It’s exciting to get such a good-quality young prospect coming to the club.”

It is a measure of the growth that Spurs have undergone of late that Bergvall has chosen North London over Catalonia or any of the other European destinations he had his pick of.

And fans will be all the more excited by the late transfer development following the January window deadline to know that they won’t have to wait long to see the results.

Eric Dier has already departed for Bayern Munich and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is likely to be on his way out in the near future, but the next generation of the Tottenham midfield is already on the way and their are high hopes for him from the outset.
